Noel Quinlan was born in Sydney Australia, attending Chevalier College at Bowral NSW, followed by an apprenticeship in Electronic Engineering at Goulburn Technical College. A professional guitarist from the age of 15, he returned to Sydney and rose to the top of his craft as studio session musician. A regular performer on TV programs such as MAVIS BRAMSTON SHOW and THE TONIGHT SHOW, his band, THE SAINTS, were resident at the Coogee Bay Hotel for three years.
Signed with Sven Liebaek of CBS Records as Artist/Songwriter, working with the Bee Gees, Rowan and Martin, Barry Humphries, Sean and Sonia, Peter Allen, Dionne Warwick and many local artistes.
Late 60's, left Australia to perform at the Hong Kong Hilton Den with the IN PEOPLE. Formed his own band, QUINLAN COLLECTION, which toured successfully in Japan and South East Asia. After a year as bandleader in the Godown Nightclub in Hong Kong, he returned to the Hong Kong Hilton as Musical Director for six years.
Formed Hong Kong's first jingle house, composing and producing thousands of music tracks for advertising, film and record. Created Asia's first multi-track recording studio, THE PRODUCTION HOUSE, which evolved into HOUSE RECORDS, Hong Kong�s leading indie record company.
Among advertising jingles composed and produced were tracks for Coca Cola, Marlboro, Virginia Slims, Cathay Pacific, Citibank, Thai International, Schweppes, Levi�s, 7-Up, United Airlines, Martel, Courvoisier, Towngas, and a virtual who's who of international advertisers. Towngas has now been using his song for over 25 years.
Participated in the career development of popular Chinese recording artists Paula Tsui, Teresa Tang, Alex Tong, Roman Tam, Sandra Lang, Susanna Kwan, Frances Yip, Tony Orchez, Danny Summer and Teresa Carpio. Signed local groups JADE and WILLY & THE CITY BAND, each selling over 500,000 copies of Noel�s songs "MY GENERATION" (Levis) and "YANG GUANG KONG QI" (Towngas Song).
In the 80's spent two years furthering his film career in Los Angeles, completing three film scores with Ringo Lam and attending Grove School of Music, studying composition and orchestration with Henry Mancini, Nelson Riddle and Dick Grove.
Returning to Hong Kong, designed and built The Sound Department (HK) Ltd., a digital recording facility to compete successfully with the best studios in the world. These facilities, combined with a wide range of talent, led to involvement in productions for major Chinese stars Anita Mui and Jacky Chan. Australian band INXS and Michael Hutchence chose Noel's studio to work on their record-breaking album, KICK.
Noel composed the scores for over 40 feature film (Man From Hong Kong etc) and documentaries, together with orchestral works for the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Cologne Radio Orchestra, and concert artists Tim Rice and Elaine Page. Was Musical Director for various live media events, including Hong Kong's "Metro Hit Awards". Heard extensively throughout Asian broadcast media, including STAR-TV, MTV, and Metro Broadcast.
February 1991 saw release of his album, "Middle Kingdom". Combining ancient Chinese melodies with modern technology and performed on computers and traditional instruments, it was uniquely positioned for a worldwide audience. This landmark CD was the first of the continuing series, with total sales approaching 1,000,000.
This was performed in concert in Beijing for 14th People's Congress of China October 1992, which inspired development of the large-scale stage show, "Tales from the Middle Kingdom", written and produced to critical acclaim and enthusiastic audience response.
1994 formed Big Sky Records, creating his own brand of World music.
The unique style of the "Middle Kingdom" productions has greatly influenced modern Asian record production, and is used extensively in films and television series. Big Sky productions are featured in the TV series "For Love or Money", "ICAC", and "Yan Can Cook", seen in over 50 countries. He recently completed 52 episodes for "Martin Yan's Chinatowns", with Middle Kingdom V released Xmas 2004.
In 2001 appeared on the compilation CD "Voyage" in the company of Enya, Enigma, Deep Forest, Kitaro, Mike Oldfield et al.
Composed/produced ID's for Sydney's newest radio station, Radio 2.
Now resides in Sydney, where he plays golf for relaxation and works on new productions planned to explore his Australian heritage.
